A weed is a plant that grows in the wrong place. Weeds in the garden contend with your precious plants for water and minerals, and also make the garden look ugly as they grow in the haphazard places. Therefore, weeds should be removed.

There are different ways to get rid of weeds. They can be removed by pulling them with a hoe, by using chemical products, or by pulling weeds by hand.

The best way to remove weeds is to pull them by hand, especially when you want to avoid influxes of the most difficult weeds such as Dallisgrass, Spotted Spurge, Creeping Woodsorrel, Bermudagrass, Yellow Nutsedge, and Dandelion.

The ideal time for hand-weeding is when the soil is soggy and moist. Soggy soil is loose enough to easily pull out the weeds with their roots. Hose down the weed area with plenty of water and let the water drench overnight before start pulling out the weeds.
After making the soil damp, identify a weed to pull out of the soil, grasp the weed between the thumb and index finger, at the place where the stem is at the soil level and pull firmly. Try to remove weeds while they are still young and before they drop seeds.

Weeds with shallow roots can be removed by simply holding the weed by its stem and pulling them gently. On the other hand, weeds with deeper roots, e.g. Dandelions, need extra care to remove them. These types of weeds can be pulled out by using a small hoe. Dig in the soil with hoe around the stem to slacken the soil around the weed. After that, grasp the stem firmly and then pull so that the entire weed comes out at once.

Successful weed pulling is done when all the roots come out along with the upper part of the plant. You need to get rid of the entire weed including its roots, rhizome, and other underground parts of the weed such as tubers or bulbs. Weeds with the thick taproot can be removed by using a wide-bladed screwdriver.

It is important to remove weeds regularly to decrease the number of annual weeds in your garden. It can be a messy task to pull weeds by hand particularly when a garden bed is covered with a lot of weeds. You can wear gloves to keep your hands clean and safe. However, you can also use hand garden tools to remove many hard weeds.

Fresh flowers look very beautiful and refreshing. Their fresh colors and aroma are quiet energizing for mind and soul. But the problem is that the flowers are not long-lasting. They wither very soon. Fortunately, there are different ways to preserve fresh flowers. Using these ways and methods we can preserve fresh flowers for a long time so that we can make our home beautiful and colorful.

Here are some methods of preserving fresh flowers which would definitely help you.

Hanging the Flowers

Hanging the flowers is the best and most common method of preserving flowers. All you have to do is to hang the flowers upside down. The first step is to separate the flowers in bunches. Then the flowers are tied up using some wires or strings, and a knot is made. The knot should be tight enough to hold the flowers while cutting stems. Now hang the string with a ceiling and let it dry for a couple of weeks. This technique is very good for bouquets.

Placing Flowers in Glycerin

In this process, take a container and pour two parts of water and one part of glycerin. The container should be large enough to hold the flowers and the water should be lukewarm. Instead of glycerin, you can also use a car antifreeze solution. Now place the flowers in the container in such a way that they are completely absorbed in the solution. The flowers will dry within 3 days to 2 weeks but it depends on the size and number of flowers. After removal from the solution, if you feel that the flowers are withered then you can hang them upside down. Then glycerin will automatically move to the leaves and branch tips.

Pressing the Flowers

This method involves pressing the flower between two layers of paper. For this purpose, you should use unglazed paper like news print. Firstly spread the flowers onto a paper in such a way that they don’t overlap each other. Then place another paper on the flowers and put a heavy object for pressing the flowers. The wait distribution should be equal. You can also make additional layers of papers and flowers and cover them with cardboard before placing a heavy object. The time taken by the flowers to dry is 2 to 4 weeks but it depends on the size of flowers.

Drying Flowers using Sand

Under this method, the flowers are dried using sand. It is recommended to sift the sand before using it in order to remove grains and other particles. You can also rinse the sand with water to remove soil. Now dry the damp sand using oven. Place the sand in shallow pans and put them in oven to bake at 250 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Now the sand is ready to use for drying the flowers. For this to be done, place 1 or 2 inches of sand in a container and put the flower head upright into the sand. Drop the sand on the petals of flowers starting with the outer petals. The flowers will dry in 1 or 2 weeks. When they are dried they become delicate and can break. So, special care should be taken while removing sand from flowers. Then the flowers should be placed in a strong box to prevent them from breaking.

Using Silica Gel

Silica gel is used to absorb the moisture from the flowers. This method is better than other drying methods because it preserves the flower in more refreshing color. In this method, silica gel is put in a spraying bottle. Flowers and petals are separated using silica gel. Then it is sprayed on petals and base of flowers. The sprayed flowers are put in a baking pan. Then it is put in microwave to cook. There is not a definite temperature recommended for this method so you should check the flowers frequently.

I hope the above mentioned methods will assist you better to preserve your fresh flowers and make your home more beautiful and elegant with dry flower decoration.

Perennial plants are the plants that live for more than two years. Gardeners or horticulturalists use the term perennial for the winter hardy herbaceous plants, whereas scientifically, woody plants such as trees and shrubs are called perennials.

Perennial plants, particularly small flowering plants, grow and flower in the spring and summer seasons and die back in autumn and winter seasons to return again in the spring from their root-stock. These flowering plants are called herbaceous perennials. Nevertheless, depending on the local environment, a gardener can treat perennial plants as annuals and can plant them out every year, from cuttings, from seed, or from divisions.

Some of the most well known types of perennial flowers along with their blooming span are as follows:

Bellflower (Campanula) – Bloom span: 2+ months

Yarrow (Achillea) – Bloom span: 3+ months

Tickseed (Coreopsis) – Bloom span: 3+ months

Red Valerian (Centranthus) – Bloom span: 3-4 months

Fumewort (Corydalis Lutea) – Bloom span: 4 months

Pinks (Dianthus) – Bloom span: 2+ months

Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia) – Bloom span: 3+ months

Coneflower (Echinacea Purpurea) – Bloom span: 2-3 months

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) – Bloom span: 3-4 months

Gayfeather or Blazing Star (Liatris) – Bloom span: 3 months

Pin Cushion Flower (Scabiosa) – Bloom span: 3+ months

Catmint (Nepeta) – Bloom span: 2-3 months

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia) – Bloom span: 3 months

Spiderwort (Tradescantia) – Bloom span: 3-4 months

Stonecrop (Sedum) – Bloom span: 2-3 months

Spike Speedwell (Veronica Spicata) – Bloom span: 3-4 months

Fringed Bleeding Heart (Dicentra Formosa & Dicentra Eximia) – Bloom span: 3+ months

Having these perennial flowers in your garden provides you a large variety of colors, types, and shapes. Although they have a very short blooming period, but if planted properly then they can bloom from spring through autumn. These flowers can be bought from the garden centers and nurseries.

The good thing about perennial flowers is that they don’t need to be replanted every year. Planting perennials along with annuals will make your garden full of colors all through the growing season.

These flowers should be planted where there is sufficient amount of sunlight, enough humidity, right soil type, and proper drainage system. Avoid planting them in the weed growing areas; use an herbicide or cover the area with clear plastic and re-soil it before planting flowers.

After planting them, take good care of them. Watering, feeding, staking, deadheading, pruning, dividing, and pest control are all included in it.

Perennial flowering plants are the best choice to grow in your garden as they return year after year. Select the plants that are showy as well as that blend well with your garden design. However, they need regular and proper care to be healthy and bloom abundantly.

Many people think that autumn is the time to forget about the garden. However, it is the prime time to pay attention to your garden because taking good care of garden in the autumn makes a great difference in the coming spring.

Here are some useful tips to prepare your garden for the winter.

Water your garden:
It is important to continue watering the garden until the ground freezes hard in winter. Your garden should be adequately watered every 14 to 21 days to keep the ground moist.
Water the woody plants especially those trees and shrubs that are planted in the current season and also all evergreen plants. Evergreens particularly require a good amount of moisture as they don’t drop their leaves. It means that they keep on transpiring, i.e. they give off water vapors, throughout the cold months.

Restore and feed the garden:
Restore the garden by reseeding any of the cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues. If winter is nearer then it is recommended to grow a perennial ryegrass as it germinates just in four to seven days, whereas bluegrass takes two to three weeks to sprout. Cover the seeds with up to one-quarter inch compost or soil to help them in taking roots.
Feed the seeds with fertilizers in two applications. The first application of fertilizer should be high in nitrogen, whereas the second application should be high in phosphorus. These fertilizers will prepare the plants for the coming year.

Transplant the plants:
Autumn is the best time to transplant shrubs, small trees, and evergreen plants. Transplant them to the new location when their leaves turn color and start to fall.

Cultivate the flowering plants and vegetables:
In many regions, woody plants make good root growth in autumn. Therefore, planting new trees and shrubs in this season is a great idea. Flowering plants especially bulbs not only are inexpensive to buy but also very easy to grow. These bulbs include crocus, grape hyacinth, tulips, and daffodils.
Some great autumn vegetables can also be cultivated and then harvested in the very same season. Vegetables like lettuce and spinach can be cropped within 30 days of planting. As long as the days are warm enough, many vegetables such as carrots, swiss chard, and broccoli are least affected by a light evening frost and can be grown easily.

Avoid pruning:
Generally, many people think that autumn is the best time for pruning. However, the case is quite opposite because pruning helps in promoting growth, and encouraging growth when plants are getting ready to go quiescent for winter is very unrealistic and insensitive approach.
Nevertheless, it is an ideal time to cut off the dead wood to prevent insects from hiding in it.

Last minute garden care:
Rake all the fall leaves off the garden as they can stifle the grass and do a final grass cutting as low-temperature fungi is encouraged by long grass. If spray is needed in the garden to kill weeds then do it in the month of October. Also, try to apply winterizing garden fertilizer.

After following all these tips properly, now it’s time for you to relax as you know that your garden is all ready for its winter nap.

Growing flowers from seeds provides a number of benefits. Flower seeds available in different packages are much economical than the grown up plants. You can also grow those flowers that are not available in your local nurseries.

Certain things should be remembered when deciding to grow seeds indoor. The basic information and some tips that will help you in starting flower seeds indoor are given below.

Select flower seeds. Stocking flower seeds is much easier than potted or bare-root plants; therefore, they are easily available in packages from the garden centers and nurseries. You can check online or offline flower seed catalogs. Sun or shade, annual flowers or perennial flowers, these catalogs have a wide range of flower seed types. Once selected the flower seeds you want to grow, you can buy them to get started.

Start seeds indoors. The ideal time for planting the flower seeds is during the winter season, approximately six to eight weeks prior to the last frost. Seeds like verbena, geraniums, and begonia take a long time to grow; therefore they need to be started much earlier than other flowering plants so that they could be planted outside afterward. If you are not sure about when to start then you can contact with your local gardening center.

There are some basic elements that are required in starting seeds indoors. It includes seeds, soil, water, light, and fertilizer. Here are few tips to get started rightly:

The flower seeds should be planted timely, so that they could be strong enough by the time you want to move them outdoors.

Always use good quality potting soil and keep it humid. Avoid using garden soil.

The ideal temperature for the seeds to grow is in between 70 F and 80 F, hence, the temperature should be maintained accordingly.

Seedlings need plenty of light. Natural sunlight is the best one, but if sunlight is not available during winter then artificial lights can be used as a substitute.

At least fourteen hours of light is required each day for the seedlings to flourish properly.

Flower seedlings are very delicate and need extraordinary care. Following tips should be considered in this regard.

Seedlings are always in great threat of getting fungus and molds. Good drainage and avoiding overwatering can help a lot in preventing them.

Always use sterile potting soil for flower seeds. This aids in improving their immune system so that they can easily fight off spores and pathogens.

It is vital to ensure that the potting mixture is not too soggy. It should be damp, but not wet.

After the germination, always use a water soluble fertilizer on the plants.

With the help of these tips, you can easily take care of your flower seedlings and within a few weeks, they will be strong enough for outdoor transplantation.

Generally, transplant refers to transfer something from one place to another; therefore flower transplantation means uprooting the plant from one location and replanting it in another location.

Transplant in flowers needs to be done for various reasons. It may be that your flowering plant requires being transferred in a more sunlight area, or may be that you want to rearrange your garden by placing your flowering plants somewhere else in the garden. Whatsoever is the reason, certain things should be kept in mind before transplanting your valuable flowers.

Here are several tips with the help of which you can easily transplant your flowers.

The first thing is to select the appropriate time of year for the transplantation. The recommended ideal time is summer and early autumn and it should be done on a warm and cloudy day.

The flower beds should be properly prepared. If you want to grow your flowers in the soil then it should be properly dug up to make it soft so that flowering plants can grow easily in it. Ensure that the space you are providing to the plant has room for its good growth.

Before transplanting flowers onto the bed, adding sufficient amount of organic matter in the soil will not only improve the soil fertility but also provide a suitable growing condition to the flowers.

If you want to transplant flowers from one container to another then make sure that the potting media you are using is made up of appropriate ingredients and it allow good drainage.

Adding base dressing of phosphate fertilizers and dolomite in the soil before transplanting flowers will help them in growing fast.

Watering the flower beds adequately before transplanting flowers will make it easy for soil to get in contact with the roots of the transplanted flowers.

Now it’s time to dig up the flowers that you need to transplant. While digging, make sure to dig out far away from the stem of the plant in order to avoid any damage to the root ball. Carefully lift up the plant and transfer it to its new pot or garden area.

Generally, the flowers should be transplanted to the depth where it can easily cover the part up to just above the roots.

The transplanting hole should be large and deep enough to accommodate the roots of the transplanting flower. The roots should be straight and fit well in the hole as upward bended roots will holdup the growth.

During transplanting process, it is essential to hold the seedlings close to the stem base to avoid any breakage.

Thorough watering should be given to the transplanted flowers so that media can settle down and come into contact with the roots. This will start the growth of transplanted flowers right away.

You should water the flowers regularly so that they can be amply established. Avoid overwatering because it can rot the roots and eventually kill your transplanted flowers.

The healthy growth of transplanted flowers basically depends on the way you transplant them. By following the tips mentioned above, you will be able to transplant the flowers properly so that you can enjoy having lots of flowers in the coming growing season.

Generally, the planting scheme of a garden is balanced with clomps of tall plants. The tallest flowers planted in the back create the most beautiful mixed or herbaceous borders. Wider the border, the more plants can be grown in various sizes.

Here are some of the most typical country garden plants that are not only very tall but also very elegant and colorful.

Delphiniums in the back of the border

Delphiniums are perennials and grow several ft tall. They are always a perfect selection for the back of the border. There are many different varieties of delphiniums available in the garden centers. These plants need full and direct sunlight but they should be planted in the areas where they can be saved from the wind. Usually, they bear flowers in the very first year they are planted.

Foxgloves for a shady border

Foxgloves are hardy biennial that can grow several ft high. They grow like spires in the back of a shady border. The good thing about these plants is that they self-seed and need not to be replanted. Their flowers create a beautiful flow of colors from pink to purple.

Big and bold Sunflowers

Mostly, sunflowers are big and bold in yellows and scalded oranges colors. They can grow to 10 ft or more. The sunflower looks stunning behind wafts of other bold-colored flowers and also behind large-leafed fauna.

Tall flowering Hollyhocks

One of the most bold and colorful tall flowering plants is Hollyhocks. Depending on location, they can reach up to the height of 9 ft or even more. They are biennials and have the ability of self-seeding year after year.

Perennial Lobelia

Generally, Lobelia is an annual plant, but it also comes in perennial cultivar that can grow 4 ft tall flowering stems. They bear red flowers that cover the tops of the stems. These plants need to be protected from the wind.

Billowy Crambe

Crambe is also known as Giant Sea-Kale, and can grow up to the height of 6 ft. These plants bear large bunches of tiny white flowers, resembling the billowy effect of Baby’s Breath, Gypsophila.

Madonna Lilies

These are very old plants and originated 5000 years back. They can grow up to 5 ft tall, and look amazing when planted in a bunch. They are easy to grow and bear pure white scented flowers.

Stately Mullein

Mullein, Verbascum X hybrium, has many very tall cultivars, some of which can grow to 6 ft or more. Its various varieties come in different colors including purple, pink, white, rose, amber, and yellow. They are multi-stemmed plants; therefore, once the flowers fade on the plant, it should be trimmed off.

All these plants are the most common among many others. It is not necessary to grow only 4 ft or more tall plants at the back of the border. Medium sized plants such as Valerian and Spapdragons can also be planted.

The tallest flowers provide the garden formation and imperial elegance. It is important to select appropriate tall flowering plants to balance the rhythm of the garden.

Many people think that gardening is a very costly hobby, but it can be an inexpensive one if you plan well and know how to have a beautiful garden by spending less amount of money on it. Following are the budget gardening tips that can help you in saving money.

The basic secret of a wonderful garden is soil, so enhance the quality of garden soil occasionally. In stead of using expensive fertilizers, you can make a compost pile and put all the organic kitchen waste in it. You can also add the blended organic waste of the kitchen directly to the soil around the heavy feeder plants such as roses.

Try to grow plants from seed. You can easily plant perennial flower seed outdoors on a warm day. All you need to take good and proper care of seedlings to turn them into fully grown plants. It is best to plant seeds in late winter so that you can get flowers till next year.

It is a good idea to grow plants that seed themselves. Annual flowering plants are best for this purpose. Although they die when winter comes, but they do not need to replant. The reason is that they usually drop a lot of feasible seeds during the growing season. This is called self-seeding or self sowing. A garden becomes full of flowers when these dropped seeds sprout in spring season. Examples of such flowers are sunflowers, cosmos, poppies, alyssum, lambs ear, yarrow and black eyed Susan.

Use atypical containers for your potting plants. Instead of buying costly planters from home improvement store, you can use anything that can hold the soil or potting media. Examples are a rusted wheelbarrow, an old cracked chimera, and a nice basket lined with plastic.

Before putting soil in the containers, line them with newspaper. This will help in preserving water and maintaining the soil temperature, results in healthier plants and water saving.

Save all the rocks that you find in a mound when digging up soil for a new garden bed. These rocks can be used to make a border around the plants. You can also use the smaller rocks in mosaic projects.

You can also order roses and other plants online at the end of winter to acquire a huge bare root discount. Many websites also offer big discounts for multiple purchases that are also quite economical.

Use old pantyhose to provide support to the climbing plants by cutting them into stripes and binding them to make tiebacks.

These tips will help you in budget gardening and allow you enjoy garden full of colorful flowers.

Daylily is usually referred to the species, hybrids and cultivars of the genus Hemerocallis. Gardening experts hybridize these plants, resulting in a wide range of colors and forms of its flowers. To identify its bloom in a garden, one should know about the different parts of plant and also flower characteristics of Hemerocallis.

Here are the main points that will help you in identifying a daylily bloom in a garden.

Hemerocallis Bloom Structure:
Daylily is the common name of Hemerocallis. Its flower is a tubular shaped bloom and is often scented. The petals of the bloom mostly consist of six perianth segments arranged in two rows. If looking at it from above, you will see three inner petals covering with three outer sepals. A daylily with double flowers is known as Polymerous because there are more than six perianth segments in it

The center vein of a petal or sepal is called midrib that runs along the length. The term midrib is used to describe the color or pattern in a daylily bloom.

The centermost inner part of the flower is called throat, and the place above the throat is called eye zone which creates a visual circle around the flower.

Daylily plants bloom from summer through winter and its blooms last for only one day. Flowers of some species of Hemerocallis open in the morning and shrivel in the evening, whereas some of its species bloom at night.

Perennial Daylily Plant Form:
A daylily plant is the perennial, and grows in a large bunch with long strap-like leaves, mostly 1 ft – 2 ft long. The plant has vertical leafless flower stems known as scapes.

Excluding the bracts, scapes are leafless that appear from the crown of the daylily. Bracts are modified leaves affixed to the scape. These bracts indicate whether more branches will develop in future or not.
The white core between the leaves and the roots is called the crown of a daylily plant. It is planted underground. A part of the crown should be included when dividing the plant. The roots of a plant are quite fibrous, but the whole root system is very thick.

Hemerocallis in Flower Gardens
Generally, daylily plants grow in direct sunlight but they can also easily tolerate partially shady areas. They prefer humid and well-draining soil modified with organic matter. Daylilies also have enough ability to tolerate hard soil conditions, e.g. heavy clay, competition with tree roots for getting water and minerals etc. Also, strong and fully grown daylily plants can tolerate dearth conditions.

Daylily plants need minimum fertilizer for blooming and stay in good health when dug, separated, and replanted almost every three years. They can grow fast, and can easily fill the garden spaces.
